A cashback app's payout is typically funded by an affiliate commission the retailer pays the app for sending you as a customer — separate from your payment method entirely. A credit card's rewards come from the interchange fee the card network charges the merchant on the transaction. Because they're funded by different mechanisms, using a rewards card to complete a purchase you found through a cashback app usually does not reduce either reward.

The single most common way people lose a cashback reward isn't a card conflict — it's simply navigating to the retailer's site directly out of habit instead of clicking through the cashback app or extension first. The tracking cookie or affiliate link that credits you the cashback only fires if the click-through happens in the right order.

A second extension running at the same time — particularly an ad blocker or privacy extension — can interfere with the tracking pixel a cashback app relies on to register your purchase. If a cashback claim is missing after a purchase, disabling other browser extensions during the click-through is one of the first things worth checking before assuming the app failed to pay.

Cashback apps commonly exclude gift card purchases, and many rewards credit cards also earn reduced or no bonus points on gift cards, and both often carve out sale or clearance items differently than regular-priced ones. Check both the cashback app's terms and your card's bonus category rules for the specific retailer before assuming a purchase qualifies for the full stack.

Stacking rewards is a way to reduce the cost of purchases you already planned to make, not a reason to make a purchase you wouldn't have otherwise. The combined 5–10% or so in typical stacked rewards is real savings, but it is easily erased by even one unplanned purchase chased purely for the rewards.
