It can seem almost too good to be true that a company hands you real money back just for shopping somewhere. It isn't charity — cashback and credit card rewards are funded by a specific, well-understood part of the retail and payments business, and understanding where the money actually comes from explains a lot about how these programs are structured.

Affiliate commissions fund most cashback apps

When a cashback app sends you to a retailer through its own tracked link, the retailer pays that app a commission for the referred sale — the same affiliate marketing model that funds many bloggers and comparison sites. The app then shares a portion of that commission back with you as cashback, keeping the rest as its own revenue. You are essentially being paid a slice of an advertising budget the retailer already allocates.

Credit card rewards are funded by interchange fees

Every time you swipe a credit card, the merchant pays a small "interchange" fee to the card network and issuing bank — typically a percentage of the transaction. Card issuers fund a portion of your cashback or points rewards out of that fee revenue, which is also why rewards rates tend to be higher on cards with higher merchant fees, and why some smaller merchants add card surcharges or offer cash discounts to offset that cost.

Why this explains common program quirks

Knowing the funding source explains a lot of specific behavior: why cashback rates vary wildly by retailer (it tracks each retailer's commission structure), why some categories are excluded entirely (categories with thin or no affiliate margin), and why reward rates can change without warning (they track the underlying commission or interchange rate, which the app or card issuer does not fully control).
