Gift card marketplaces let you sell an unused or unwanted gift card for cash — typically at a discount to its face value — and buy other people's cards at a discount yourself. It is a legitimate, well-established niche, but the discount cuts both ways, and knowing the typical range helps you judge whether a specific offer is fair.

Why cards sell below face value at all

A marketplace buying your $100 gift card for $85 isn't being unfair — it is pricing in the platform's own cut, payment processing costs, and the risk that some cards turn out to be invalid, already partially spent, or fraudulently obtained. That built-in discount is the actual product the marketplace is selling: liquidity and convenience, in exchange for a fee taken out of face value.

Discount rates vary a lot by brand and demand

Highly requested retailers (major general-purpose retail brands) typically sell closer to face value with a smaller discount, while niche or less-in-demand brands sell at a steeper discount since there is less buyer demand to absorb them. Checking a card's typical resale rate on a marketplace before assuming a "standard" discount will save you from underselling a popular brand or overpaying to offload an unpopular one.

When reselling actually makes sense

Reselling makes the most sense for a card you have no realistic use for — a brand you never shop, a duplicate gift, a card from a closed business's remaining balance. It makes far less sense for a card from a retailer you occasionally use anyway, where using the card yourself at full value beats selling it at any discount.

Favor marketplaces with buyer/seller protection and a track record over an unfamiliar new platform for anything beyond a small amount
Never send a physical card or its PIN to a buyer before payment clears through the platform's own protected process

Buying a discounted gift card for a retailer you were already going to shop at is effectively a small guaranteed discount on that future purchase — a lower-effort version of the same trade, without needing to have an unwanted card to sell in the first place.
