Running AI Models Locally: What You Actually Need to Get Started

The main draws are privacy (nothing you type leaves your machine), predictable cost at scale (no per-request billing once you have the hardware), offline availability, and freedom from rate limits or account suspensions. None of these matter if you only send the occasional simple request, but they matter a great deal for privacy-sensitive work or heavy, repeated use.

A local model needs to fit its full set of parameters in memory to run at a usable speed, which makes system memory — and video memory specifically, if using a graphics card — the resource that most often determines whether a given model runs smoothly, poorly, or not at all on your hardware, more so than raw processor speed.

Quantized (compressed) versions of open-weight models can run on far more modest hardware than the full-precision original, at a real but often modest quality cost. For most everyday tasks — drafting, summarizing, simple coding help — a well-chosen quantized model on consumer hardware gets you most of the practical value, even though it will not match the very largest cloud-hosted models on the hardest tasks.

Most people should start with whatever computer they already own and a smaller model sized to fit comfortably in its available memory, rather than buying new hardware up front. Several dedicated local-model runner applications handle model downloading and setup with minimal configuration, which is a far easier starting point than manually configuring a full inference stack.

For the most demanding tasks — the highest-quality reasoning, very long documents, or workloads that need to scale well beyond one machine — a cloud-hosted model still meaningfully outperforms what most people can run locally. Local models are best understood as a strong option for privacy-sensitive or high-volume routine work, not a universal drop-in replacement for every use case.
