How Gacha Pity Systems Actually Work

Hard pity is a fixed pull count at which the rare item is guaranteed — for example, guaranteed by pull 90 in some well-known systems. Soft pity is a separate mechanic that gradually increases your odds of the rare outcome starting some number of pulls before hard pity, rather than leaving the odds flat the whole way there. Games with both tend to feel less punishing in practice than the flat base rate alone would suggest, since most players actually hit the rare item during the soft-pity ramp rather than at the hard cap.

A common system layers a coin-flip on top of pity: when your pity-guaranteed pull lands, there's roughly a 50% chance it's the specific featured item you want versus a random item from a wider pool, with a loss carrying a guarantee that your next pity pull will be the featured item. Understanding whether a game uses this layered system changes how many total pulls you should actually budget for a specific target, since a lost 50/50 roughly doubles your realistic pull count.

Progress toward pity is typically tracked separately for different item tiers or banners (limited-time pull pools) rather than as one account-wide counter. Spending pulls in one banner generally doesn't carry pity progress into an unrelated one, so pulling on a lower-priority banner for fun can reset a counter you were otherwise close to fulfilling.

In regions with gacha disclosure requirements, published drop rates and pity thresholds are regulatory disclosures rather than optional marketing copy, which makes them one of the more trustworthy numbers a game publishes. Treat the official rates page, when available, as the source of truth over community rumors or older guides that may reference an outdated version of the system.

Because pity mechanics make the outcome for a specific target reasonably predictable once you know the hard-pity count and 50/50 rules, it's more useful to decide your spending limit in terms of "pulls I'm willing to do for this target" than a vague currency amount. That framing makes it much easier to walk away once you've hit your own limit, win or lose.
