Most emergency fund advice is written for a predictable paycheck: save three to six months of expenses, set an automatic transfer for the same amount every payday, done. If your income varies significantly month to month — freelance work, commission, seasonal gig work — that advice doesn't break, but it needs to be adapted before it's actually useful.
