Frequently asked questions
What counts as business mileage? +
Driving between work locations, to meet clients, to pick up supplies, and similar business trips. Commuting from home to a regular workplace generally doesn't count — though if your home office is your principal place of business, trips from home to other work locations usually do.
Do I need to keep a mileage log? +
Yes. The IRS expects contemporaneous records for every trip: date, destination, business purpose, and miles driven. An app or simple spreadsheet kept at the time of driving is much stronger evidence than a number reconstructed later.
Can I switch between the standard mileage rate and actual expenses? +
You generally need to use the standard mileage rate in the first year you use a vehicle for business to keep that option available in later years. Switching from actual expenses to standard mileage afterward has restrictions, so it's worth deciding your method early.
Does the mileage rate cover gas and maintenance? +
Yes — it's an all-in rate that already bakes in gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation, so you can't also deduct those costs separately for the same vehicle under the standard mileage method.
What about commuting miles? +
Never deductible, under either the standard mileage or actual-expense method.
